Electronic and electrical devices are designed to operate at a rated maximum supply voltage, and considerable damage can be caused by voltage that is higher than the devices are rated. When the voltage in a circuit is raised above its upper design limit, this is known as an overvoltage. The conditions may be hazardous. Depending on its duration, the overvoltage event can be transient, a voltage spike or can be permanent, leading to what is termed a power surge. The OVP-2 has been designed to eliminate the potentially damaging overvoltage and power surges which can occur on the input power for a sensitive audio system. The system operates by constantly monitoring the incoming AC power and switching the AC HOT line ON and OFF within one half cycle of the incoming AC power. The trip point is set at 134VAC, 12% above nominal line voltage, and will reconnect the HOT line when the incoming line voltage drops below 132VAC. The system also provides remote ON/OFF switching to allow easy ON/OFF control from a remote location. The OVP-2 includes a single 20 amp control circuit in a remote panel. The OVP-2 can be remotely switched via a standard Category 5 cable connected to an external switch contact. The switching is fully isolated and requires less than 250µA of switching current per OVP-2 panel. Multiple OVP-2 panels can be interconnected allowing a single switch closure to control a large number of circuits in a system. Connect the control output of the first panel to the control input on the next OVP-2 panel to control multiple OVP-2 systems with a single switch contact. An ON/OFF indicator can be added with a signal LED.
